Some Ideas for Starters…

Was looking for ways to engage my students as they arrived in my classroom. They often turn up in dribs and drabs from other lessons so one of the problems is to start off those that arrive on time  allowing the same opportunity for those that arrive a few minutes later.

Began by targeting a particularly difficult group, Yr 9 a group of twenty four with twelve on the special needs register, mostly for behavioural issues. The idea was to have a video running, but wanted it to be focused on the learning  for the lesson. Made up some Wordle images, saved in ppt as images and then into Movie maker. i was then able to add a script and background audio to the starter.

Not sure it worked that well, but feel it is a beginning. Better if I don’t use it in every lesson, but just another tool on the way to raising standards?

Just getting started witn this blog! Am currently working on developing a project based around the planet Mars which has automatically led me to the fantastic musical version of War of the Worlds by Jeff Wayne. I am going to create podcasts of Richard Burtons narration and then ask students to create an image based on what they hear. The next step will be for students to create their own podcast from a drawing and then pass that on.. early days yet.

Another part of the project will involve students accessing the Nasa websites http://beamartian.jpl.nasa.gov/welcome which encourages students to become a Martian citizen and then leads them though a series of activites which encourage learning about some of the science of space.

I am hopeful that this will lead to an activity on “crater counting”, there is an online activity on the website, and will also allow my students  to be able to overlay a grid across a Martian Landscape image and using coordiantes navigate their way across a Martian plain.

This whole project is still being formulated so any more ideas very welcome.

Wordle Martian Project

Finally managed to get my podcasts done. The idea being that the descruption is loosely based on Captain Phillips description of the Martians in the War of the Worlds. Taken from the original Orsen Wells script. I asked two “essex geezers” I know, Paul and Merv to do the recordings for me. I am going to ask my students to create an image based upon the descritopns given, I am not sure in waht format yet. I will then ask my students to create their own podcast for use in creating yet more images. Any ideas to refine this project greatly appreciated!
